
The Plovercrest or Black-breasted Plovercrest or Beija-flor de topete as is known in portuguese (Stephanoxis lalandi) was registered by Vieillot in 1818 and it's the only member of the genus "Stephanoxis". Its distribution includes southern Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentine (Misiones). Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montanes and heavily degraded former forests. From peak to tail it measures between 3.15 to 3.54 inches.
