¡Es muy sencillo! Si usted desea que su hogar sea visitado por ésta ave, puede preparar su alimento fácilmente, sólo necesita preparar una mezcla de agua y azucar con una proporción de 4 a 1, para lo cual, deberá agitar perfectamente hasta que se disuelvan todos los grumos.
NOTA: Sólo use agua purificada o en su defecto, agua hervida, la cual se deberá dejar enfriar a temperatura ambiente. Por otra parte, no es necesario agregar ningún tipo de colorante a la mezcla, ya que el néctar de las flores es transparente.
How to feed a hummingbird in your home
It is very simple! If you want to be visited by the hummingbirds, you can feed them preparing nectar easily. You only need to prepare a simple mix of water and sugar in a ratio of 4 to 1, for which, should stir thoroughly until all the lumps dissolve.
NOTE: Only use purified water or alternatively, boiled water, remember cool the water before preparing the mix. On the other hand, you don't need to add any artificial coloring to the mix because the natural nectar is transparent.
¿Que tipo de ázucar podemos usar?
De hecho usted puede usar cualquier tipo de azúcar comercial, sin embargo, es preferible emplear azúcar morena o azúcar estandar para elaborar el néctar por las siguientes razones:
El azúcar morena se obtiene del jugo de la caña de azúcar y no se somete a refinación, sólo se cristaliza y centrifuga. Éste producto debe su color a una película de melaza que envuelve a cada cristal la cual normalmente tiene entre 96 y 98% de sacarosa y su contenido mineral es mayor. El azúcar estandar por su parte, es menos oscura que el azúcar morena pero cuenta con un mayor porcentaje de sacarosa.
En nuestra opinión, nosotros no recomendamos usar azucar refinada por lo siguiente:
El azucar refinada o azúcar blanca, es altamente pura, es decir, tiene entre el 99.8 ó 99.9% de sacarosa. Sin embargo, para obtener esa puresa, el azúcar es disuelto para aplicar reactivos como fosfatos, carbonatos y cal para así poder extraer la mayor cantidad de impurezas hasta lograr su máxima pureza.
NOTA: Cabe hacer mención que en el argot azucarero se define como impurezas a todo aquello que no es sacarosa, por lo que en el proceso de refinamiento se desechan algunos de sus nutrientes complementarios como vitaminas y minerales.
What kind of sugar can we use?
In fact, you can use any kind of commercial sugar, however, it is better to use brown or blond sugar to make the nectar for the following reasons:
Brown sugar is obteined from sugar caine juice and it does not have been refineted, only is crystallized and centrifuged. This product owes its color to a film of molasses added to each glass which usually has between 96 and 98% sucrose and its mineral content is higer. In other hand, the blond sugar is less darker than brown sugar but it has a higher percentage of sucrose.
In our opinion, we do not recommend to use the rerfined sugar for the following reason:
The refined sugar or white sugar, is highly pure, approximately 99.8 or 99.9% sucrose. However, to reach that purity is necesary first af all, dissolve the sugar and then reagents are applied such as phosphates, carbonates and lime to remove major impurities to achieve the maximun purity.
NOTE: It should be mentioned that in the jargon surgar business, the impurities are defined as anything that is not sucrose, for that reason, in the refining process are eliminated some additional nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
Bebederos para colibrí
Los colibríes gustan de beber principalmente, el néctar de las flores de color rojo, naranja y amarillo brillante. Es por ello que la mayoría de los bebederos de colibríes, son de éstos colores.
Existen actualmente en el mercado, diversos bebederos para colibrí de diferentes capacidades, calidades y precios. Usted puede fácilmente encontrar bebederos de 150 y 200 ml. sin embargo, existen otros de mayor capacidad que van de los 500 ml. a 1 ltr.
En cuanto a las calidades hay que decir, que van de la mano con el precio, pues existen bebederos que cuentan con dispensadores de cristal o de plástico. Los primeros suelen ser más caros por el tipo de material.
El rango de precios oscila entre los 25 a 700 pesos mexicanos, aunque existen más caros. Sin embargo, no es importante si usted opta por uno caro o económico, lo importante es que pueda disfrutar de la visita de estas aves en su hogar.
NOTA: Es posible que los colibríes tarden en aprender a usar su bebedero debido a que algunas aves están más familiarizadas con algún modelo en específico. No se desanime, es sólo cuestión de tiempo.
Hummingbird feeders
The hummingbirds like to drink nectar from red, orange and yellow flowers mostly. That is why most hummingbirds feedings are of those colors.
There are currently on the market, several hummingbird feeders of differrent capacity, quality and price. You can find easily feeders of 0.04 to 0.05 gallons. However, there are some ones of 0.13 to 0.26 gallons.
In relation with the quality, we have to say that it goes hand with hand with the price, because there are hummingbirds feeders with dispensers of glass and other with plastic. The fist one are more expesive for the kind of material.
The price range is between 1.99 to 54 US dollars, although there are more expensive but is not important if you opt for the cheaper or the expensive one because the only important is that you can enjoy the visit of these birds at your home.
NOTE: It is possible that the hummingbirds take time to learn how to use the feeder because there are some birds more familiarized with some feeders in specific. Be not discouraged, be patient.
Consejos para la correcta ubicación del bebedero
Es importante ubicar de forma adecuada el bebedero buscando lugares cercanos a ramas o árboles por dos razones:
1.- La primera, es para que los colibríes se puedan posar.
2.- La segunda, es para que pueda haber suficiente sombra que permita evitar que el sol pueda fermentar el néctar y transformarlo en alcohol, ya que ésto, es muy dañino para las aves.
Por otra parte, es importante saber que el néctar es un medio ideal para que se puedan desarrollar bacterias o algas, así que se deberá cambiar con frecuencia, sobre todo, en climas cálidos.

Tips for the properly location of the feeder
It is important to properly locate the feeder looking for near places to trees, for two reasons:
1.- The first, is for the hummingbirds can pearch.
2.- The second, is to find a not sunny place to prevent that the sun can ferment the nectar and convert it into alcohol because that is very harmful to birds.
On the other hand, it is important to know that the nectar is an ideal medium for develop bacterias or algaes. For that reason we must replace it frequently, most of all in warm climates.
¿Cómo darse cuenta que es momento de cambiar y limpiar el contenido del bebedero?
La verdad es muy sencillo, ésto dependera de la frecuencia con que las aves visiten su hogar así como del tamaño de su bebedero. Por dar un ejemplo, si cuenta con un bebedero de 150 ml. el contennido prácticamente se acaba diario, así que usted tendrá que sustituirlo todos los días. En caso de sobrar o que aún haya néctar en su recipiente, sustitúyalo con nuevo.
Por todo ello, si usted cuenta con un bebedero más grande, no lo llene a su máxima capacidad, es importante que observe dos cosas: Primero que todo, la regularidad con que lo visitan los colibries. Segundo, el promedio de consumo de néctar para evitar desperdiciar y aprender a preparar la cantidad exacta.
How to know when is time to change and clean your feeder?
Is very simple, depending of how often the birds visit your home and the size of your feeder. To give an example, if you have a feeder of 0.04 gallons, the content practically finishes every day, so you will have to substitute it daily. In the case of a bit leftover it is better to substitute the content with new nectar.
Therefore, if you have a bigger feeder, do not fill it to maximum capacity, you need to watch two things: First, how regulary the hummingbirds are visiting you. Second, what is the average nectar intake to avoid wasting and learn how to prepare the exact amount.
¿Cómo limpiar adecuadamente el bebedero?
1.- Desarme el bebedero.
2.- Límpielo perfectamente utilizando sólo agua caliente.
3.- Si es posible, emplee cepillos especiales para remover cualquier suciedad.
4.- Es importante que NO USE JABÓN O DETERGENTE para limpiarlo, por que estos pueden ser tóxicos para los colibríes.
5.- En caso que usted desee desinfectarlo, puede utilizar cloro diluido, cerciorándose después, de enjuagar perfectamente el bebedero y posteriormente, dejarlo secar y orear por un día antes de volver a llenarlo.
NOTA: Este último punto, no es recomendable hacerlo tan seguido, por que puede contaminar el bebedero y con ello alejar o envenenar a los colibríes.
How to properly clean your feeder?
1.- Dissamble your feeder.
2.- Clean it well using only hot water.
3.- If is possible, use special brushes to remove any dirt.
4.- It is important that you DO NOT USE SOAP OR DETERGENT to clean it, because this can be toxic for the hummingbirds.
5.- If you wish to disinfect it, you can use diluted bleach and thereupon you must be sure to rinsing well the feeder and then, letting it dry an aerate for one day before refilling.
NOTE: This last point, is not advisable to do as often, because it can contaminate the feeder and thereby, alienate or to poison the hummingbirds.
