Su distribución comprende Nuevo México , Arizona y el oeste de Texas en los E.U.A., y desde Sonora y Nuevo León hacia el sur, a todo lo largo de la Sierra Madre Oriental y Occidental, La mesa central de México hasta las costas de Guerrero y Oaxaca. Su hábitat natural son los bosques de montaña, aunque durante el verano es suele ser un residente común de los bosques húmedos que crecen en las barrancas. De pico a cola mide entre 11.5 y 13 centímetros.The Blue-throated hummingbird or Blue-throated mountain-gem (Lampornis clemenciae) was registered by Lesson in 1829. Its distribution includes New Mexico, Arizona and western Texas in the U.S.A., and from Sonora and Nuevo Leon throughout the south to Sierra Madre Oriental and Occidental, the Central Plateau of Mexico to the shores of Guerrero and Oaxaca. Its natural habitats are the mountain woodlands, although during the summer is often a common resident of moist wooded that grows in the canyons. From peak to tail it measures 4.53 to 5.12 inches.
