El Colibrí portacintas piquirrojo o Colibrí doctor de pico rojo (Trochilus polytmus) fué registrado por Linnaeus en 1758. Este colibrí además de ser endémico de Jamaica, es también su ave nacional, el cual incluso es llamado "Doctor bird" (aparentemente existen direrentes teorías en relación con el origen de este nombre) el cual posee la cola mas larga de cualquier colibrí (15-18 cm). Su distribución comprende la mayor parte de la isla con excepción del extremo este, con un límite que va de la Bahía Morant, en el sur, siguiendo el Río Morant, en dirección de Ginger House y el centro del Río Grande hasta al norte de Puerto Antonio.
